I'm trying to take pictures of belts with stainless steel buckles. The problem I'm having is that either the overhead lights, or the flash of my camera capture the shine on the buckle, which ruins the picture.
I've tried taking without the flash, but the light in the room still causes this problem.

How do I avoid it??

(I can let my website go live as soon as I solve this issue, which is why its urgent)

another tip is to use a difuser on the flash. you can try a home made one like a clean film canister or even an undershirt over the flash. you will still get light from the flash but not direct and no glare.

Try taking one without a flash and you should be standing between the object and an open window.

make your own lightbox:
use a tissue to cover the flash, and use your flash for the pic. It should work. If I learnt right from DH, that is.

well, I went to 2 different stores to get tissue paper and poster board. it worked very nicely for some of the items, but the shiny ones still have a gleam somehow.

YALT, if I do what you said, can all the lights in the room be off and the covered flash will be enough?

DH suggests:
Keep the lights on. make an L-shaped backing out of a towel/bedsheet which is a solid dark color (ex: dark blue, black, green) Place belt on that. Try to lower intensity of flash (so that not so bright.

you need to put reflectors around the belts. I saw this on ehow.com. You get a foil boards (silver, if you are working with that color), and place them on either side (I think) or maybe on top, and the light will bounce off the board instead of the belt.... go to ehow.com to check it out.

Read your manual. I think you can lower the flash power. It might help.
