my baby is three months and I just started going back to work. I am out over 10 hrs a day. when I come home, the (usually happy and smiley unless hungry or dirty diapered) baby wont make eye contact or smile at me for 15 minutes- half hour. the whole time shes 'ignoring' me I hold her and talk to her. then she eases up and gets happy and smiley again and plays with me. is this normal? how much can such a young baby understand about separation and length-of-time... I didnt even know she knew who I was!
please respond, t makes me so sad that she is hurt by my absence, but I have to go to work!

I think it's hard to leave a baby at that age anyways. Remember as she grows older her memory span will last longer and things will get easier with time. You're not a bad mom, or the only mom to go to work with an infant in the house. These days it's rather common and the norm for many.
