It's a pan that has removable sides. I'm assuming that you're asking with regards to a cheesecake because it's often used for that because there is no way to remove a cheesecake (or other delicate cakes)from a regular pan, so you'd use the springform pan and then remove the sides to serve it.

You can leave the cake on the bottom of the pan or can line the pan with parchment paper (you have to cut it to the size of the bottom of the pan) and remove the cake (on the lining) and transfer to a plate.
