I've bought from Craigslist, assuming that the seller has to pay a fee. Now I posted something for sale, and I, the seller, didn't have to pay.
Whats in it for them?

Nothing. The guy who started it makes no money off the site. You cannot pay for ads and no one profits. He's a bit of a whack job.

They are definitely making money. Estimates range from $10M to $20M per year.
They charge for brokered apartment listings in NYC, and for job advertisements in I think seven different cities (basically the largest ones).
Of course they are making peanuts compared to what they could be. But yes, they are idealists and are not interested in operating a money-sucking type of site. Refreshing! (BTW I believe Craig Newmark is Jewish, at least he had a bar mitzvah.)

Why does doing something for his community for free make him a "whack job?"
