has anyone ever published a book who can give me some pointers? how do you go about it? do I call up, tell them my idea then go ahead if they are interested? do I send them a rough copy before I do anything else? need some advice, thanks in advance

What kind of book? Childrens? Adult? Jewish? Regular? It makes a big difference.

Hachai, Artscroll, Targum, Judaica Press, Feldheim, Israel Book Shop are all best contacted by email - info on their websites and all prefer emailed manuscripts. If you just have an idea and haven't actually written it yet, I'm sure you could email them and ask if they are willing to consider it before its written.
Good luck.
I've found them all (other than Feldheim) to be very prompt with their replies.
