pre 1A is another term for SK plain and simple. Pre=before... 1= 1st grade

Is kindergarten for 4 year olds, and pre 1A for 5 year olds?

AFAIK there isn't an extra year of school in Yeshivos compared to public school, so 4 year olds must be in Yeshiva kindergarten, whereas 4 is the last year of pre-school for kids who will go to public kindergarten at age 5.

Is this correct?

in public school:

3 year olds- nursery (not usually part of the PS system)
4 yo- pre-K
5 yo- kindergarten
6 yo- first grade

in yeshivas:

3 yo- nursery
4 yo- kindergarten (or sometimes UPK)
5 yo- pre-1A
6yo- first grade

my elderly neighbor said that when she was young (in NY) that each grade had a "a" and "b". there was 1a and 1 b, for the first and 2nd half of the year respectively; 2a &2b & so on. Pre1A, I guess, was what the 5 year olds entered in the beginning of the year.

The school year was divided in half, with 2 separate start dates. So some kids started 1st grade in September (1a September - January, 1b February - June; 2a September to January, etc.). Others, with birthdays from February to August (as a guess) started in February (1a February - June, 1b September - January; 2a February - June, etc) So some kids graduated in January, and others in June.

I guess that's where pre-1a comes from.

Our school uses the normal designations:

Pre-k (or 4-year nursery)

Kindergarten

1st grade
