I'm new to it & I'd like to get good deals. Any tips? (Especially how not to buy from the wrong places...)

The main thing is to read everything (small print included) carefully before you buy. Check how much shipping is, the condition of the item, etc.. With buying used things there is always a chance of the item being not so functional.
The nice thing about sites likes Amazon/Ebay/etc. is that they are really great about the customer always being right. If a seller cheats you, you can complain and almost always get the problem resolved quickly.

Look for the "ships free" deals and "subscribe & save" deals. Those make it sooo worth it.

If you have a kid, sign up for Amazon Mom and you get free shipping on "prime" items for three months (more if you buy enough things from the baby store) and discounts on some kid items.
Even without Amazon Mom, some items can be bought on "subscribe n save" which gives you 15% off. This is mostly things that get used up, hence one might want to subscribe for repeat shipments (soap, paper towels, diapers, etc) but you don't have to get more than one shipment if you don't want to.
If there's a specific item that you want, particularly a pricey one, and you're willing to wait on it, you can enter it into camelcamelcamel.com and it will track the price history on Amazon so you know whether you're getting a good price or should wait for a sale.
