European type washer, front load, 8k.
Obviously I don't weigh my dirty laundry, so how full can I load it and still be sure the clothes get clean?

I just put in a laundry basket's worth. Unless you have huge baskets...

I have HUGE baskets!
I mean how much space should you leave empty inside the machine?

I don't leave any space in the machine. I fill it without packing it.

I put in so that it is full but not overflowing.
ALternatively you can also fill it until there is a small amount of space left at the top to fit your hand there.

When I bought mine -in the usa if it makes any difference- the guy told me to stuff it and then add one more item. I dont usually do that, but I do fill it up.

I leave a little space on top. When you fill it up it doesn't have place to move around

Pandabeer, my clothing always compresses when it is wet and there appears to be plenty of room even when I fill the machine.
