My dh's kippah needs to be washed desperately. Is there any way to do this without ruining the kippah or does it just need to be tossed?

Suede cannot be washed. Some surface dirt and stains can be removed with an artist's eraser--it's a blue putty-like kneadable material that you press onto the surface to lift off dirt. Grease including hair oil can be removed by sprinkling with cornstarch and letting set for a day or so, then brushing or vacuuming off. Restore the nap with a wire suede brush or the Magic lint brush that looks like red carpet material. Spots that have worn smooth can sometimes be restored by rubbing with an emery board.
Few people would consider a kippah to be worth this kind of effort, but if you do, knock yourself out, as they say.

Oh, shaving cream can also remove dirt and some grease, and not only on kippot. Works well for upholstery, too.

My husband's suede kippot sometimes find themselves in the wash, by mistake, and nothing terrible happens to them, so I think they can be washed in the machine.

The suede ones that accidentally went through our machine turned into rock hard boards, I wouldn't be chancing that on purpose. You could try hand washing but might just be time for a new one. We go through so many kippot in this house, so many don't wash well, I wish they'd design them better...
