My ds really wants to know how to read. He is 6 . They start teaching reading English next year when he is in fist grade. What are some kids dvds that you can recommend that teaches reading concepts?

I'm with chocolate moose. The way to help kids learn to read is to sit with them and read. Dr. Seuss or other early readers are helpful. I also like the books where the parent reads most of the words, and there are pages with 1 or 2 words for the emerging reader to do, usually with a picture, and a word that rhymes with something you just read on the previous page.

Computer games like Reader Rabbit can be helpful for beginning phonics, but if a child knows the alphabet and its sounds, you can move on quickly. Point out common double letter combinations --- CH, SH, TH, and vowel combinations -- magic E, EA, OA, OO. Buy some flash cards with sight words. Point out "No" on the "no parking" signs, and encourage reading of other easy words when in the car.

Read aloud together, pointing to every word, and occasionally, pause and ask your DC to read a word or two. Help out as needed.

No DVD can do this as well as you can. And it's fun!

Thank you olive oil. Seriously???????? Read to your child a lot. Sit down with him and practive. A computer or tv? Not only will it not help him read but it will have other negative consequences.
