What's the deal with liquid and powder laundry soaps? Are liquid ones more expensive per wash? Is there an advantage to using the liquid ones? Why do my mother and MIL use liquid, and I and all my neighbors use powder?

IME the powder leaves a residue on the clothing, you can sometimes see it on black fabrics. Here in Israel the powder is way cheaper. Also, if the water isn't hot enough the powder doesn't completely dissolve.

I have been told by plumbers and appliance repairmen that the liquid is better for the pipes and the washing machine (it dissolves better). Powder is cheaper.

powder is cheaper. I've used both, but currently I use biokleen, which I find dissolves very well and does not leave any residue. other powders I've used have not dissolved properly. so I do feel it has to do with the brand. I don't always wash my laundry on hot water, but the biokleen does just fine.

If you allow the (top-loading) washer to fill somewhat, dissolve the powder, then add the clothing, the clothing won't get so crunchy from powder residue.
Liquid is easier, and I now have a front-loader with a dispenser, so I buy the liquid on sale for a reasonably good price.

first off you always put the detergent in along with the water whilst filling up ... then you add the clothing ...
powder is best for dirty grungy clothing as it helps scrub
liquid for the finer clothing
