Do you use a timer for shabbos hotplate or crock pot?

Yes for hotplate (timer set to go off after dinner, comes up mid-morning, solid foods for lunch placed in the morning while the hotplate is still off).
No for crockpot (plugged in before shabbat and stays throughout).
FYI, Kosher guide pubished by London Beth Din has some words on Shabbat. In it, they recommend using the timer on hotplate, and placin solid foods while the hotplate is on off position.

even if its not for cooking purposes? eg you only need it on friday night, so set the timer to turn it off after the meal?
Once I left my plata on over rosh hashana plus shabbos - it burnt a huge hole in my counter Even though I place on a ceramic tile. Clearly its not safe to leave on so long.

I did not know this. What Rabbonim don't allow a timer?

I use a timer just to turn it off shabbos afternoon, and I was wondering if that's assur. It never occurred to me to ask a Rav.

Interesting DH holds the same way, Put food on when hot plate is off and then timer turns it on. We have the HP on for about 2.5 hours on Shabbos.

I believe Rav Moshe holds that Shabbos timers are not permissible.

I only use the timer to turn off the hot plate. This was per my rabbi.
"The Shabbos kitchen" by rabbi simcha Cohen discusses the use of Shabbos clocks and heating food in the appendix of the book.

Yup for the crock pot (I use a blech so no hotplate).
It is on from beginning of shabbos and set to go off around the time we eat lunch. Once it is off dh pushes the rest of the pieces so it shouldn't go back on before shabbos goes out (being that in the Winter it is on from 3pm friday).
