Was the water warm? Did you add some sugar?

Does this mean the yeast isn't going to work and the Challah won't rise? Should I stop (bec. I don't want to waste time and flour) and buy new yeast and start over?

How long did the yeast and water sit?
Is the yeast past expiration date?
Could the water have been too hot?
If it's been sitting for a while (over 15 minutes) and still hasn't bubbles at all, I wouldn't risk it. See if you can borrow or buy new. JMHO.
why amother, BTW?

I know it is too late to answer you now,sorry I didnt see it before,but I want to tell you in general;
I bake challah every week!
Yeast DOES have to bubble-so this way you know it is ACTIVE & the dought will rise nicely!
However, I have some bad experience with fresh yeast.
I but them fresh ,the expiration date is still good-but from some reason they dont always wark.
I found this new solution that I love & it always works;
I but the Glass-jars of dry yeast by Fleishmans.
I store them in the fridge after opening anfd it is really good!

I have stopped using fresh yeast all together, because so many times its been bad, I started buying a huge bag of dry yeast and keep it in my fridge, it lasts for months.

If she no bubble, she dead. Boruch Dayon The Mess. That's exactly why you first "proof" the yeast with some sugar and water to see if it's alive--so you don't waste time, material and effort adding dead yeast to your baking mixture and end up having to throw out the whole thing instead of just the yeast.

I had this happen last week, I used warm water, but maybe it wasn't warm enough. I pre-heated the oven, then turned it off and put the bowl w/ yeast in the warm oven.
