How long past sell by date will cake be fresh?

Can I buy a cake that has a sell by date of Monday and will it be good till Shabbos?

melt in your mouth chocolate cake, or cinnamon babka, sponge cake, etc.

I would leave cake in the original package but should these kinds of cake be kept in fridge, freezer or on the counter?

Bakeries that package cake usually give a 4 - 5 week date. By the time your nearing that date, the cake is pretty old.
