I actually strongly disagree with many of the posters above. Too big, loose or drapey (esp. chiffon) clothing drape your body too closely and can make you look bigger and 'lumpyier'.
Style is about shapes and silhouettes.
So thicker fabrics that hold their own shapes can be key to creating a nicer silhouette on a plus size person.
Be careful not to add more visual weight through fabrics that are too heavy or too embellished, or by covering up too much (esp. with sleeve length)
Heels definitely help you look more proportionate- try wedges if heels are too hard for you.
Of course, it all depends on what shape your body is in- round (biggest around tummy), pear-shaped (smaller on top, larger at hips), rectangular (no visible waist). Try googling searches like "how to dress for my body shape"...
