I usually do my own sheital and I've had the mazal that I have a really easy sheital to take care of but it's short.
A few years ago I bought a pony tail sheital on sale and recently realized that I can wear it down. Well, I've been experimenting and while it looks great down and straight, I want to curl it. So, I bought a curling iron.
And, I've watched the youtube videos, but I can't get the sheital to hold the curls. What am I doing wrong?

Use hairspray first to dirty it up and give it texture - it'll hold better.
Some processed wigs don't hold a curl well - they may have had a chemical straightener added.
