Apparently, although fetal surgery can produce a live baby where a child would have otherwise died, it does pose risks to the mother.

I find it interesting to see the opposition to fetal surgery from the secular sector.

I had an argument recently with someone who opined that the Lubavitcher Rebbe would "change his mind" about routine ultrasound during pregnancy due to the advances in this particular field in the last 20 years.

He made it sound as if fetal surgery will be standard procedure given certain congenital conditions (only identifiable via ultrasound) in the forseeable future.

My son's friend's baby had fetal surgery for a serious congenital defect. The friend and wife are very yeshivish — I'm sure they sought rabbinic advice.
