Fox, you're right. And I may be contributing to this happening with my own sons, in encouraging them to find a rav, someone they respect and will use as a resource. (And not necessarily just one, but a main one.) I have to trust them to be attracted to someone worthy of their choice.
But I think we, the parents, still impact powerfully.
ETA: And I've been happy when my girls find mentors too. The more good adults in their lives, the better.
And another PS: My sons didn't necessarily get their licenses as minors. But they still drove with us a lot, formally and informally.
