I am teaching first grade for the first year.
the veteran teacher gives each student a personal chalkboard to write with at their desk.
I was looking into whiteboards which have lines on one side and blank on the other.
This is also one of the last teachers to teach on a chalkboard verse a whiteboard.
Which do you think is better? why?

I think the main reason everyone is switching to whiteboards is because
1) they don't make chalkdust messes or allergies
2) No scritchy-scratchy noise and texture (major improvement for the sensory among us)
3) dark marker on white board shows up better for reading than light chalk on board that invariably turns gray
On the other hand, dry erase markers are generally impossible to get out of clothes - just something to keep in mind. I think they make washable ones now but probably expensive and not sure how well they work.

The whiteboards for writing as well as formative assessment. See video here: http://www.dryerase.com/ Make sure that if you go this route to use NON-POROUS boards so that they stand up to time and cleaning.
