We are finishing our basement and our contractor told me that when he was digging a deeper window well for a large window there was a terrible smell. Not sure if it is septic or some sort of gas maybe radon. He is very experienced. Did most of the basements on our block and he said he never experienced this before. I am not sure who to call to check it out but he suggested perhaps a home inspector can be our first step. Does anyone have a name of someone good or a different avenue to take?

Radon is odorless.

from my experience your contractor was hired to take care of whatever comes up in this job of the basement anything that happened related to the job is his business to take care of. you are not a contractor bec you are not experienced and dont know what to do and thats why you hired him. he is trying to throw it on you cause he doesnt know himself but I would just say that this is his job to take care of. otherwise you wouldnt be hiring him. obviously you need to say it to him in the most civil way so he doesnt get all offensive and walks off on you. just in a very polite way say you arent experienced in any contracting and you trust he is the one taking care of this. cause think of it . how can you know this stuff?
