MIRROR
I dread the day you’ll question in pain
Head in hands, hefty sigh
And I’ll stand behind, hand on your shoulder
And you’ll tell me I’ll never understand
Baby—that will slash my soul
And though you’ve walked through hell
I’ve given you my life and done all I could
Your heart is a mirror to me.
My heart beats with yours, son
I can feel your tears burn my cheeks
When you reach, I cheer with pom-poms
When you triumph, I swell with satisfaction
I gauge your complicated, beautiful eyes
And feel their rhythm now
The ache in my heart spreads to my fingertips
I prepare my answer, as if gift wrapped in cellophane—
Filling my eyes with some-twenty-odd years of love,
I desperately hope this will work
As a tear rolls down, I hug you hard
And hope that I’m your mirror too.
