Our pediatrician said my baby needs a blood test at his 9 month well visit. It is a regular blood test where they draw blood from the arm, not a heel prick. I don't remember this by any of my other kids. I am so nervous!!

Not in the US- had this recently for my dc, complete blood count (including hemoglobin). They don't need much blood and if you have a good nurse or phlebotomist it shouldn't be a big deal. I was also a little worried, but dc cried for less than 3 seconds and I think it was more about my holding her arm out than the needle prick.

IME this is usually done by a 1 year (and 2 year) visit.

My dr did a cbc, lead and hemoglobin (may have been part of cbc but not 100% sure) at my ds's 1 yr.

pause-depending on your dr depends on when they will do it (only know this from getting wic and they asked me if I got blood at the 9 month appt and I responded my dr most do it at the 1 yr)

In the doctors office where I work, it is routinely done at 9 months of age, since the majority of the population has WIC, which requires a hemoglobin BEFORE the 1st birthday.

ETA: we do this as a simple fingerstick and not a venipuncture
