When I bought bed linen for my first (and didn't know the gender), I went with teal, cornflower yellow, and some accents in all of the primary colors...so, I guess preschool colors.
With the neutral gray/white foundation you have, maybe go for some subdued versions of the primary colors? I think a multi-colored rug is the way to go.
Or dark purple as suggested above.

We have a grey and yellow nursery, with a white and yellow patterned rug! I think it looks lovely, very classic and definitely gender neutral!

Love the idea of one bold color. I love teal or fushia, (And I am ok with a bright yellow, dark purple, or green but not in love as much).
Anoyone have a specific rug they love and would recommend (for texture/look/staying clean... not necessarily color)
