Hi,

We're looking into moving to a community sometime in the next year or two with
  • A Lubavitch K-8 and High School,
  • A good sized Yungerleit community,
  • That is warm and welcoming,
  • With affordable (under $250K for a 4-bed) housing,
  • In a city with Network engineering jobs.

Right now we're in a Chabad House in Texas (we're effectively BTs from Chabad Houses originally), but we're realizing that while the job market is great where we are, we need more Lubavitch infrastructure than what just a Chabad House with a couple anash families can give us.

What communities fit these descriptions? Pros and cons? We've been recommended Pittsburgh and Chicago.

New haven might be a good fit for you. There's a Lubavich community that has k-8 school, plus girls high school and boys yeshiva. It's been growing steadily and has homes in the $200k-300k range. It's about 1.5 hours from NYC. Might be something to consider

I'm not particularly up on Lubavitch in Chicago, but it should have everything on your list except for the price/housing requirement. A 4 bedroom private home in the area with a strong Lubavitch presence will be at least $350,000, probably more.

Not that many communities that have a HS.

Pittsburgh sounds like your best option.

I dont know the job market in detroit but housing should be in your budget. They have schools k-12 but the girls hs is tiny.

Thanks everyone. Pittsburgh is looking pretty attractive.

We're also considering Houston - we know it doesn't have a high school, but it at least has an elementary (our kids are still young) and it's close enough that it would allow my husband to keep his job.

How warm is the community? Are there many young anash families at the main Chabad shul there?

There is a Facebook group called: New Lubavitch Communities, I think you may get more help and information there.

Coral Springs may be an option, has some of your requirements.
A nice sized community, very large percentage of frum, tsnius families

Very warm and welcoming

Homes more like $400-450,000 for a 4 bedroom with a yard and pool.
Girls and boys really amazing schools through 12th grade.
Not sure about jobs, everyone needs to look for themselves as they need to fit their own needs.
City is growing, many new homes going up, new businesses being built, so it looks ripe for new jobs.

Houston may have some of what you are looking for. Houstons chabad school is day school run by chabad. There is a high school for girls run by the Young Israel, but majority of chabad girls and boys go away so if thats important to you, pittsburgh and chicago are better options. In terms of Lubavitch infrastructure, depends what you mean by that. There are not so many Chabad anash events like there would be in a bigger community, but there are some and the other shuls have things going on(even though the communities dont mix so much)...nishei is not so active, maybe 2 events per year. The younger people that have moved in recently are more modern which can be confuaing for a BT when you are moving in the opposite direction as your peers...and you might not have the same warmth that a chabad house can provide but that is normal with any anash community. There are a few restaurants and food is easily available. Its very very affordable to buy a house which is awesome, however the frum neighborhood is surrounded by all low income apartments and so its not the safest part of town hence why it is so cheap to live. There is an eruv, but its not the best eruv, no notice that its been checked, and none of the Chabad Rabbis in town acknowledge that its technically kosher, which is difficult if you need to use it (chicago and pittsburg dont have that "political" issue). Let me know if you want me to PM you if you need to know more. It is a nice place to raise a family...but like all communities, it has its issues

Re to the last post it is an overall warm community, but most people have their family there so it could be difficult if you dont have nearby

Pittsburgh and L. A. Have a great school system. Including secular studies for boys thru put high school.
Sorry, but while coral springs may be a warm, nice community, the elementary school is in pretty bad shape.

The chicago Lubavitch community is known for being particularly unfriendly.

Interesting comment. I really wouldn't know. I do know that they don't have anything to do with the rest of the frum community; they totally stick to themselves.

I guess people see things differently!
I have family in Hebrew Academy of margate and they love it! Kids are doing amazingly well. The high school and mesivta look great too. I have family in LA school system, girls are great and boys elementary, boys high school has a lot to be desired!
I have friends in Pittsburgh, they are happy with elementary but not as much with boys high school, don't know about the girls.

I want to add Cleveland to your list... not a huge Lubavitch community, but a strong frum community overall with two great schools. In fact, my neighbor recently moved here from Houston for the school and community. Big downside is the weather. Job market is good in some fields, but not all.

Houston is also a great choice, if that does work for you. It's a small community but I hear it's really warm and also a very good school.
