My 9 year old has a small regular job once a week that he's very proud and pleased to do. He helps out at the neighborhood Jewish library. He told me he was saving the money he makes, but when I asked him to show me how much he has saved up till now he very shamefacedly told me he has been spending it every week at the makolet on candy. Now I know it's his money and he can do what he wants with it but I explained to him that now when he really wants something special that he wants to buy himself he doesn't have anything to spend. I told him that buying a candy bar once in awhile is fine like for Rosh Chodesh, but every week? I told him that if he's having trouble saving the money he's earning I could hold it for him like a bank and we can discuss together what he wants to spend if he wants to buy something for himself. Just wondering if I handled that right? He gets paid 12 shekel a week for work that takes a few minutes.

I think you handled it very well. If the money is by you the temptation to spend ot won't be so strong. And after a few weeks when he'll see how it's adding uo it will give him the push to continue saving. I think I'd also tell him that even though it's his money I can't let him buy candy every week as it's not healthy.

I agree. We give our kids glass jars and show them how to put in spare change and watch it grow.

Ds has ADHD and watching the money without being able to buy something right away is very hard. Tho he can do it. I would love to do this with him tho.
