My h is a mitzvah policeman with our son. Our son is in his late teens, and he recently told me:
"Totty forgot that he said 'baruch shepitrani' At my bar mitzvah."

I understand your dh and your son too.
It's hard for a parent to see their child not going to shul when you feel it's the right thing to do as we all know. But we can't force it. And the more we push him the less he wants to go.
Dh should let go of telling him to go to shul.
Ds is old enough to make up his mind which things he wants to do and doesn't like to be told. It's not very easy.
Daven and be happy for what he does do.
From imamother with 2 older teens who is grateful every time they DO go to shul which isn't too often.
