When they ask for it.
Don't give until nighttime accidents are a thing of the past.

I agree with when they start asking for it, or you can see them balling their blankey into a pillow. Otherwise when you transition them to a toddler bed is a great time. If you are concerned with nighttime accidents, there are protective pillow covers or just use pull-ups at night.

Around 13 months... once I feel they're really mobile and strong enough for it not to be a safety hazard. They sleep much better with the pillow.

what kind of pillow do you give them? a regular sized one or a small one? one marketed for toddlers?

Around 2. We gave a small one. I think the key is not how wide it is, but how flat - think about how small their necks are and give them a flat pillow, regardless of whether it's an adult pillow or a kiddy pillow.

Out of Curiosity, what does a pillow have to do with night training?
