How much is a reasonable budget for a HS boy? We can afford to keep up with his spending, but I am worried this isn't teaching responsibility.

Can you work backward ? What do you expect him to buy on his own with that money and then add how much will you give for discretionary spending on not necessities ?

I calculate how much I would spend and then am super cheap, I give between 10-20 more depending on grade, we increment up each year.

It's pretty much only food.

He has a gas card, so he doesn't need money for gas.

I buy all the clothes and accessories he wants. I buy his sports equipment and electronics.

What food does he need to buy? Lunch?

I’d say $20 a week is plenty.

In order to teach responsibility he should learn to budget. And earn money. He should pack his own lunch most days and eat out once a week maybe.

That’s my philosophy with my high school kids

He needs to buy whatever he wants to eat that isn't in the house as I am disabled, and there hardly is any fresh food here. He get supper when he comes home if he is hungry, but he gets home after 9:00 twice a week and close to 8 twice a week. He leaves 6:30 a.m.

I had mine make a basic routine of whicstores for which meals aND check the pricing for what he orders. That way I knew and it wasn't a wild guess.
