Can someone tell me what the communities upstate are like? I'd like to hear what is available for schools, housing, etc. all across the spectrum. TIA!

Why don't you visit upstate and see for yourself? That will really be the best way to get to know the community.

I'm not op, and I'm also interested to explore options for upstate. Which communities exist there?

By upstate, do you mean the Catskills, or all the way upstate? There are communities in South Fallsburg, Binghamton, Rochester, Buffalo, Albany, Ithaca, possibly Syracuse, and I'm sure several more. They are very diverse not only religiously, but also in terms of size and amenities, especially schooling options. Which part of the state are you looking in, and what type of community do you want?

For the second amother, who didn't clarify if she also meant the catskills...
But I can tell you a bit about Rochester. There are some Modern Orthodox, a lot of "just plain frum", some yeshivish (chofetz chaim style yeshivish), some sefardi (ranging the gamut from completely irreligious to yeshivish), and a handful of Lubavitch families. The biggest segment would probably be the "just plain frum".
Elementary schools - there is a yeshivish day school run as a part of the Chofetz Chaim yeshiva here, and there is a community day school (majority of students are not frum). High School - girls - tiny Bais Yaakov style school (but somewhat more open than your average in-town BY). Boys - Chofetz Chaim high school.
Housing - 2 bedroom apartments for 800-900. Houses for rent - 3 bedroom usually around 1600-1800. Houses to buy - you can get a 3 bedroom 1.5 bath house for around 180k. 4 bedroom anywhere from 200k and up.

Rochester is a bit of a drive from NYC, so won't work. I need to be close to the city. Catskills is close enough. Though truthfully, I prefer higher than the Catskills for the sake of air quality.
