My 10 year old son shrugs his shoulders and blinks his eyes repeatedly. He used to open his mouth wide very often. I also noticed that he generally has black bags under his eyes. I’d really appreciate feedback from those who found a solution to their child’s tics. What worked for you?

How long has this been going on for? Are tics a new thing or something he's always had?

Black bags under the eyes could be from broken sinus blood vessels (from chronic infections or allergies).

Is he a generally anxious person? That can cause tics...

Pay attention to what triggers it. Then talk to your son that you’ve noticed him doing “x..” when he’s (stressed, and get, very happy...). And he should be aware of it and focus on something when he feels the triggers coming.

Ex: if excitement causes him to pinch himself, when he starts getting excited he should clap his hands...

We did this with my son (therapist recommended to) and we saw a big improvement.

Did he start taking medication I.e. for Adhd? That can cause tics.

Another pandas mom here. We are having this now too. Our pandas dr said the black bags are related.

Thank you for all the responses!

I think he has been having the tics for over a year. He is not a generally an anxious child although he does work hard at schoolwork. Most of my children are BH very bright, yet we never single him out. He gets a little outside help and is doing quite well BH.

I have wondered whether he has allergies due to the dark circles, however I haven’t noticed any other symptoms.

I didn’t think of Pandas. Would there be any additional symptoms?

Should I try an alternative practitioner? If yes, what type?

My son who is on the autism spectrum used to tic uncontrollably and over a year ago, upon going low carb, they very nearly completely resolved including much of his perseveration and self stimulation behaviour. His anxiety went WAY down. He was 21 when this happened. I wish we’d known all along.

Wow Andrea. BH you eventually figured something out.
My son is basically an average sweet kid who developed tics and as I mentioned , he has dark circles under his eyes.

Would homeopathy be worthwhile to explore?

We tried homeopathy for my sons tics it did not help.
Its extremely important your child gets enough sleep. Stress or anxiety can trigger new tics. My son has Tourettes motor and vocal tics. He would tic more when he got excited or nervous and when tired or hungry. We tried medication it helped for some time. Bh over time things improved. He is not on medication and he outgrew some of the tics. Tics can come and go...try to see if their is a specific trigger or time when he tics more.
If your child has vocal (snorting, clearing throat noises and motor tics ( blinking opening mouth...etc it can be tourettes best to see a neurologist. Medication can help if its taking over his life socially or emotionaly.
Help your child relax more, Epson salt baths
Some say magnisium supplements.
Its also so important to talk to your child about his tics, litsen to his feelings if they are bothering him or if kids are saying stuff to him. If it doesn't bother him its best to try to ignore them dont make a big deal about it. Telling him to stop will not help even though it can be frustrating for you to watch him tic away...
Sometimes its a faze and they go away on its own other times more intervention is needed.
Good luck!

The dark circles under the eye indicate chronic infection and/or allergies, both of which can cause neurological disturbances. It would be worthwhile to explore what is at the root of the symptoms and treat from there. Homeopathy might be a good option, but you need to know what you are dealing with. For stopping the tics, high doses of magnesium, NAC, or gaba can work. OTC meds with dexteromethorpan as active ingredient can help too, it is a glutamate blocker. You may also want to explore low histamine and low glutamate diets. This website has some really good info on treating tourettes/tics. https://latitudes.org/

There is no blood test that can rule pandas in or out. It is a clinical diagnosis. Only someone very well versed in the disorder can make the diagnosis, based on clinical symptoms and clues in bloodwork. Unless your pediatrician also happens to be a pandas specialist, they are likely not qualified to make or rule out the diagnosis.

Please give the advice coming. Thanks to everyone who replied.
My son does not have vocal tics. It is very possible that he will outgrow his motor tics. I thought maybe there is something I can do to speed that along.

He does tend to go to sleep late. It’s not always worthwhile for me to make a big fuss about that.

He isn’t due for a well visit for another few months so unless I see other symptoms, I don’t think I would check for pandas.

Pandas shows up from a strept antibody screening. Ask for it.

These tests can give a clue as to what is going on but are by no means definitive either way for pandas. Someone can have high antibodies and not have pandas, or have normal antibodies and still have pandas. The presence of pandas symptoms along with elevated antibodies will confirm the diagnosis, but the presence of symptoms alone even without the elevated antibodies can be diagnostic.
