I need help repairing dress in image below (pic is from designer’s spot in monsey but dress was bought at sage in Lakewood)
It’s a black striped lace over a white polyester dress. The dress is very gathered at the waist.

One of my daughters got a hole around the navel area - above the gathered waist. About the size of a dime in one of the ‘clear’ stripes. Must’ve gotten stuck in a zipper. It’s very obvious.

I’m trying to think how to repair it. Most economical. (Dress itself was under $40) and it should look nice.

I’m thinking something like if doing cherry blossom iron on from the shoulder over the stomach.
What color would you use?
Do iron ons last through cold washes?
Will the lace melt when ironing?
I can’t get my hand between the lace and the dress. I’m wondering if that will make it difficult to iron on.

I’m thinking of these iron ons:

I’d also appreciate any other ideas

You can either stitch them also on top of the ironing so it doesnt come off.

Or, you can add a row of dime sized round buttons.

I would first just try to stich it together with very small stitches. It may hardly show if it's so gathered. You can use black thread or clear thread if you have.

It’s on a flat area. Like 1-2 inches above the waist. I think it will really show. Plus the lace looks like it will just unravel.
I could try to show it to a tailor to see what he thinks.

A sash or belt.

Maybe you could sew a big black rosette at the waist big enough to cover the area. I don't think the iron on things will look naturally part of the dress.

That or a large bow. The sash is also a good idea.

I was thinking a large belt also. Reinforce the hole with something glued onto it from behind and then a belt on top.

I really appreciate everyone who took the time to comment.

The belt sounds the safest. But because of the gathered waist I think it will look funny. Unless the belt is wide enough to go down to the waist.

Below is a pic of the waist and hole and a pencil to just give an idea of distance. The belt would have to sit under the pintuck and go high enough to cover the hole.

Would this work?

I like the idea of adding a color. Just don’t want to make it too busy.

You could stitch the hole and follow the lace with black thread. It will be barely noticeable.

Don't bother showing to a tailor. Get out your needle and thread, sew neatly close to the edge. It really won't show.

I would try sewing it like above and if it still shows, a wide sash or row of buttons. Anything you iron on/add permanently except for buttons can be problematic.
Pretty dress.
