my 8 yr old suddenly started acting out a lot. stamping her feet, whining, complaining about everything. There haven't been any big changes in her life or in our family life. I'm concerned but I can't pinpoint what may be going on.
Is it possible that it's preteen action coming on?

She's getting older and it's normal to act out at this age. School is also getting harder at this age. I wouldn't call it pre teen though, pre teen is 11-12.

Yes 8 is a preteen especially nowadays when many kids start puberty at 9. But also rule out strep.

Could be. But could also be that a change you don't see as big is big for her. Has a teacher or friend of hers been quarantined? Has anything happened that might remind her of being stuck at home for three months or longer? Is there a teacher on maternity leave? Did she bomb a test? Is she having trouble with a friend? 8 may not be preteen biologically, but it is socially. And fourth grade (sometimes third) can be very very hard socially.

IMO 8 is a "big kid" preteen is definitely 11-12, maybe 10 too.
