College for special Ed students

My daughter has a medical issue and struggled in school. She attended a special Ed school
Has a regents diploma
She wants to be a therapist for kids with trauma / health issues
And she'd be great at it!!
However, I'm afraid the college classes would be too hard for her
Any advice?

I don't think that this should hold her back. She can take it slow, she doesn't need to take a full courseload each semester.

A community college might be a good place to start.

Take it slow. I had a co-worker whose son was disabled. He took 2 classes a semester. It took him much longer to graduate with a degree, but he did it!

B"H, these days, it's not unusual to take some combination of online and in person courses at your own pace.

I think the days when everyone finished in 4 years, and would look askance at someone who didn't, are long gone

She should go for it! She will be an excellent caring empathetic therapist.

All colleges have an office of disabilities (I think that's what its called?). They job is to provide accommodations for students with diagnoses. Most colleges also offer free tutoring that she can take advantage of.

And she should definitely take it slow. She should only take as many courses as she can handle or semester and in the long run it doesnt matter how many years college takes

I have several friends with disabilities who did college. It was long and hard, and there were setbacks (like failing and needing to retake certain licensing exams). But they all did it and they are so proud and so successful in their profession.

Definitely do not discourage her from doing it. It's worth a try!!

Wasn't there a college guidance counselor at her school to help?

My cousin who has cerebral palsy is now a special ed teacher (so she did both college and graduate school). All schools will have disability services available, but you should still do your research, be ause some places are better than other when it comes to actually implementing accommodations. But with the right support in place, no reason she can't do it!
