Out of town, big city.
I am trying to figure out if I am too loose about spending, or if my idea of what a family of 7 needs to live on comfortably is just way off. The numbers are not adding up. Full tuition is about 17k per kid and so far 3 are school age.
I am curious about the range as well--x amount is just barely making it, y is comfortable, z is comfortable plus there is extra to invest for retirement and the kids for the future.

I voted 170-200 but before I read how much tuition is. For that amount of tuition per kid, I'd say at least 200-250, without extra to invest.

Really depends on which city. In some places rent/mortgage is a fortune. Also there are many other variables like do you travel in often, send kids to sleep away camp etc

Depends on how much tuition you pay. That is literally the deciding factor.
Without tuition, 150-200k gross should be just fine.
For those prices you need an additional 100k gross at least.

I don’t know but keep in mind numbers will change
Now it’s 3 tuitions so it’s 17x3
But when you will Iy”h have 5 kids in school it’ll be 17x5

I'm guessing that many people with that size family aren't paying full tuition in your community and that if/when your family grows tuition per kid might not be as high unless you are able to make that kind of money.

Even 300k living simply may not be enough. You're tuition alone for 5 kids is 85k net. How much are you making net from 300k, about 200k? after deducting 85k, you are left with 115k for food, health insurance, clothing, mortgage...

My frum family of 6 gets by (simple living) on about $100k yearly, so I voted $110k for 7. Obviously the fact that I pay $4500 tuition per kid (kollel rate) while you pay $17k makes all the difference!!

My frum family of 7 lives very nicely on $150k but we live in Israel and tuition is negligible.
That includes pensions for both DH and myself, and savings.

How would we know the answer to your question?
Tuition is 85K.
What is your rent/mortgage?
Do you have a car? 2 cars? Own or lease or financed?
Insurance costs? Do you pay private for healthcare, is it employer provided/what is your contribution?
Do you have life insurance? Home insurance? Car insurance?….
Gas/electric. Do you have solar? Included in rent? Or a large home to heat/air condition?
Summer camp?
How expensive is food in your neighborhood? What do you eat?
Need I go on?
