My 8 and 9 year old doesn't always have time to sit and have breakfast before going to school. Sometimes I give them a bag of cereal, cereal bars, or granola bars. The cereal and granola bars end up costing a lot of money. Does anybody have any on-the-go-breakfast recipes? It cannot include rice krispies because I can't get it here. I can get corn flakes, oatmeal, raisins, corn syrup, etc.. Thank you in advance!!

I'm asking now because they only started school in the begining of March.

what about making waffles or pancakes and freezing them, just like the boxed ones, then you can pop them in the toaster or microwave, cheap and to go!

Abby's oatmeal muffins

2 c oatmeal
2 c flour (I use 1 1/2 c. flour and 1/2 c wheat germ for more fiber)
1 1/2 t baking powder
1 1/2 t baking soda
1/2 c oil
1 c sugar (when I use choco chips I reduce the amount of sugar)
1 c orange juice
2 eggs
chocolate chips or raisins

combine driy ingredients. in a separate bowl, beat eggs and mix with other ingredients. mix this into the dry ingredients with a spoon

Thank you for your quick responses. I did almost all my shabbos cooking/preparing in that time (I'm fast and I don't make that much).
cm-the yogurt and apple sauce is a good idea, except I'd have to ask them because they go to school by bus and straw and bus don't always mix. yeah, the muffin or bar idea was more what I was thinking.
sleepless-I've done sandwiches, but don't always have bread, thanks
shoy18-I never of thought of taking it to go. I do make panacakes and waffles (for supper sometimes).
squash-thanks

I think sweet carbs like a muffin are terrible for breakfast. is it so out of the icture to take 10 minutes for brekfast at home, or when waiting outside for the bus ?

If it's sleep an extra 10 minutes, yes. As it is, no matter what time I get my dd up, she's still not ready.

What time did you have to leave in the morning to school? What time did your school start?

IIRC =If I recall correctly.

I think cereal is the best breakfast because it's fortified with vitamins and minerals.

Cereal is a good food nutritionally. But it sticks to the teeth, remember.

It doesn't stick to my teeth any more than other food that I eat during the day. Regardless, I brush my teeth twice a day and floss daily, so it's not much of an issue for me.

Okay, Defy, but you're not a little kid eating breakfast while waiting for a bus.

What I eat: yogurt, coffee, spinach salad doesn't stick to the teeth at all, but I wouldn't recommend a kid eat like I do !!!!!

cereal is a snack food here
my kids are early risers so we do a full hot breakfast.
for on-the-go I'd second the sandwich idea. you can keep bread in the freezer to make sure you have it on hand.
or, if you're willing to bake muffins, you can bake whole wheat rolls. that with a slice of cheese is a pretty decent breakfast.

or if you don't have to worry about a nut-free-bus environment, a bag of almonds & raisins might do the trick as well.

We do cheese with rice or spelt cakes or crackers. They get some protein and whole grain carbs and no sugar Very Happy . Great on the go, too!
