If you have an iPhone, a similar idea is to set up an automation when CarPlay is disconnected. Mine asks me if the baby is in the car.

Even better are the Cybex car seats that come with sensor safe. Just a one time set up and will remind you if baby is in car right away.

My trick is to take a clothes peg and attach it to the car seat harness. When you put baby in the car seat, put the peg on your collar. When you take baby out of car seat, return the peg to the harness.
If you forget to take the baby out of the car, you will soon notice the peg on your collar.
The problem with the shoe or purse method is that you might not remember to do it. But with the peg, you can’t fasten the baby in the car seat without removing it, so you will always remember to take it off and put it on your collar.
Ways to develop the peg idea would be to make it into a little sign that says “check back seat of car for baby”. Other people will notice it too even if you don’t, and they can warn you.
Of course you could use both methods. My car (Honda Odyssey) now has an alert when I turn it off that tells me to check the rear seats.
