I made the seder for the first time myself and B"H all went well.
The only issue I had was.......the lettuce!
I should have bought the "green house" lettuce that only required rinsing. But I didn't.
I am so nervous because I read that some bugs camouflage into the lettuce. I had a guest help me check, but I hated that task.
What did you do??

well you wash off the lettuce ... soak in salt ... then rinse and check ... you need good eyes and good light ...

We don't use romaine - we use horseradish root, but I do have a question for all of you romaine eaters -is it really bitter when you eat it? I could understand using endive or radicchio - those are really bitter! - but I use romaine all the time at home, and it doesn't seem like it would be bitter, even in large quantities. Just asking.....

We only use Romaine for our children. I don't find it bitter at all, even in large amounts.

Supposedly, "endive" is the real bitter herb you are supposed to use! If you have ever had endive, you will know what I am talking about. But if that's "real" - did they have that back in the day? Did they have Romaine? Horseradish root? What do the Sfardim use?

the idea to romaine lettuce is that while it grows sweet - if you leave it too long in the ground it turns bitter ...
anyways I use both the lettuce and the horseradish straight up - nice and potent ... my kids brought some hearts from dxh so a good chunk is a kezayis ...

Just curious, was it Alei Katif Romaine from Israel or Mexico?
Note: the bugs you see in Alei Katif (from Israel) are not the reg bugs found in regular romaine. they dont furrow into the leaf and grip tightly like thripes. The bugs in lets say Andy Boy are much harder to see if you dont have a light box. They are the same color as the lettuce, and very tiny. In Alei Katif, those bugs are just regular bugs that come off easily with just rinsing. (and are more noticeable)
