Ruchel, how do you kosherize broccoli and strawberries? Sprinkling water and vinegar sounds like baptizing...

She didn't say sprinkling, she said dipping. And the OU and vaad here say the same thing about strawberries (except they say soap and it's dipping, agitating and washing off the soap)

Penny, if you'd like to know, let me know and I'll find out precisely.

Edited, PM me with any concerns. -Crayon210

Very sincere. According to the research I did, and I did lots of it, brocolli needs to be so well checked and most of the pple don't even know what to look for since it is very hard to see the infestation as they very often look like the floret part. Not only that, but no amount of swishing gets these insects to undo their claws with wich they grip the floret heads.
Because of the above, I haven't eaten any brocolli in close to 2 years. One of the companies should be coming out with greenhouse grown, insect free brocolli, cauliflower and other veggies. Can't wait!

Sorry if it seemed as if I was bashing- I simply found it interesting that companies are spending millions to produce insect free vegetables while others say "soak it and swish it and it'll come off". If that would have been an accepted option, I believe these companies would have simply done just that.

so your opinion is set, why asking?

I will just say in Europe it is the normal thing to do. People do not buy hechshered veggies (I still have to see them in Jewish shops), people do not refrain from eating stuff, they just do as they rabbanim say: they clean them. In kosher restaurants they serve everything too.

As I said, quickly, "My husband's rav, who is a kashrus specialist (wrote about kashrus extensively, etc), says you can kosher them by checking and dipping in vinegar/soap.".

Being french too, I have a slightly different opinion than Ruchel.

We get frozen kosher veggies from Israel in most jewish stores : artichokes, beans, goush katif salad (fresh), spinach, cauliflower.

I personnaly don't eat brocolis, and tend to avoir rasberry since I have no trust in those, knowing all the bugs they can hide.

In restaurants I doubt you'll find a brocoli dish or a rasberry tart Smile

Ha, frozen? I don't really check, I buy them all fresh. Maybe they're in the frozen section. Aren't they much more expensive? I will check next time, because I'm curious now.

Broccoli I hate, we rarely have them. But not never either, sometimes I feel like re trying and becoming less picky to be a good example for my dd lol

I have seen raspberry tarts in Jewish bakeries. Brocoli dish I will pay attention, because I dunno.

I will agree that looking inside every raspberry is annoying (dh says it's just laziness LOL). It's only worth the effort when you only feel like having them...
