In the US, do you wash containers of yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus, pasta sauce jars, milk bottles etc, before putting it in recycling?

The garbage men will not take dirty items, and then we would get fined.

I don't.

First of all, the industrial washing process is going to be much more effective and use less energy and natural resources than me washing at home.

Second of all, the article I read encouraging washing containers before recycling used the argument that "recycling companies pay more for a cleaner load." Well, that's not a reason for me to spend time and water trying to get a mayonnaise jar spotless! I'm doing this for the environment, not as a fundraiser for my city.

Third of all, unfortunately most recycling doesn't end up getting recycled. In my city, we've seen many times where they don't even pretend - they dump the recycling right in with the trash bags.

If I would have time to wash then I wouldn’t be dumping them- then I would be reusing the containers.

I don't wash to completely clean, but I do fill container 1/2 way with water, shake and spill out.
A quick rinse.

I don't wash them, but I do rinse them. They're not clean enough that I would put something new in them, and use them for storage or to eat from. But they don't have visible food residue.

Even though a lot of what we put in our recycling doesn't end up getting recycled, some of it does. And if it isn't washed, then it definitely won't get recycled. I work in this field. Thanks for bringing it up!

We don’t recycle, but before I got married my parents did. We wouldn’t wash things, like with soap and water, but everything got rinsed out with warm water.

I'm curious what percentage of recycling actually gets recycled. Do you happen to know?

Probably not. You can do your best to clean and put it in your recycling, but no guarantees.
