Most and probably all "body washes" and shampoos are soap free. They're based on synthetic chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate, which are "surfactants" or synthetic detergents. "Soap" is created by the reaction of vegetable or animal fat, with sodium hydroxide or lye, in a process called "saponification." This may be of some importance to militant vegans who oppose using animal products for any purpose whatsoever. Synthetic detergent products work better than soap in hard water and cold water, and can be combined with other compounds for added performance.
From a practical standpoint, unless you live in an area with exceptionally hard water or take a lot of cold showers, the difference is negligible. Choose your body wash based on price, color, or fragrance, not on whether or not it touts itself as soap-free.
