I was told a very complicated way to check them.
I've heard others were told to just wash.

Occasionally. They hang out in the "crown."
Whenever I'm not sure how to handle a fruit or vegetable, I Google OU insect checking guide. Star K website also has one but I think theirs might be more geared toward mashgichim, I don't remember.
