A neshamah is a part of Hashem. Hashem is limitless so there is no number to the amount of neshamos.
Your neshamah cannot be contained in your body. We are all connected to Hashem still and only a small piece of your neshamah is actually inside you. Your neshamah fits in your body the way your foot fits inside your shoe. Most of your body is outside of your shoe.

Everyone has two neshamos. They get the second neshama by bar/bas mitzvah.
The neshama has five levels.
1) nefesh
2) ruach
3) neshama
4) Chaya
5) yechida

So so far everyone has been correct. All souls are really one. Yet the Zohar identifies it as having 600,000 parts. Of course, they can be split in infinite ways to produce the millions of people. The neshama itself has multiple parts or levels that appear at different points in person's life.
As with all things of a more mystical nature in the Torah, there are many ways to understand it although full understanding is beyond us.
