It's like when you read the 1 star reviews about someone whose package came missing pieces, etc. You're going to hear tons of negative because negativity spreads fast and strong.
It's not so likely that one of these horror stories will happen to you. I guarantee you, most passengers don't lose their luggage or land in a different state.
I've flown spirit a bunch of times but tend to do it less since the airport closer to me doesn't have spirit and the further one is a big hassle and expense to get to. My relatives fly spirit all the time and sometimes have annoying stories. But not bad enough that they'll never fly spirit again...
If you're low maintenance and want to save a bit of money, you may as well take it
Just don't think you're saving that much money because the extras really, really add up
