I by mistake paid the original creditor instead of paying the collections agency. What happens now?

Call the collections agency and tell them the bill was already paid.

I will but don’t they own the loan now? So wouldn’t it not make a difference to them if I paid the old creditor?

Iiuc collections agencies get a portion of the collections.
But you don't need to pay a debt twice. They can work on tracking down your payment now.

Tell them you paid the original creditor. They will work out with them what happens to the money you gave. Just keep proof you paid it
