I've been using clinique make up ever since. Lately it's been annoying to realize that it looks so cakey on my face.
Any recommendations or tips for how to apply so it looks smooth on my face?

If it looks cakey, you're probably applying too much or using too much setting powder.
Apply foundation in thin layers with a damp sponge. (Make sure you're moisturizing too.)
Depending on your skin type, you may not need a setting powder. If you do, use a lightweight translucent one very sparingly.

As you get older the same products might not work as well for you anymore. Try something else meant for mature skin, will usually be something lightweight and hydrating…

So it may not be the actual product but just the way I apply it.
I will try using moisturizer just before applying.

Before moisturizing, you should exfoliate so that the moisturizer will be more effective. Try the first aid beauty radiance pads if you have never tried exfoliating before.

Do you use a primer? Primer can help prevent cakiness sometimes, but using an incompatible primer just makes it worse.
