Hi,

Anyone in the New York area (5 towns, Queens, or Brooklyn) give a sourdough class? I would love to learn how to make!

Hi,
I'm not in your area and I don't give workshops but I myself have just mastered the art of sourdough and I'm completely self taught. Although initially it seems quite daunting, once you get to know your starter and understand your baking schedule, it's actually very easy. Read a few recipes and then pick one to start with. Once you get the hang of that you can experiment with different recipes. Now that I'm used to sourdough, I don't think I can go back to regular.

My shul Sisterhood did a sourdough workshop with Chamudi Jacobs (@Kim's sourdough) and Chanalee (@thechallahfairy) a couple of years ago. It was a lot of fun. I didn't keep my starter going all this time, but other people did.

I would start after pessach.

If someone can give you a starter, it is not complicated.

To make your own starter is not complicated either, but it takes a bit of patience.

"Spice and zest" sell starter (13 $ - heavily overpriced, but only 10% of the price of a workshop) and have a video of what you should do.

There are also many, many youtube videos on how to make starter and sourdough bread.

Rye flour works better than wheat flour and tastes better too.
