For various reasons I will need to be on bc for around 6 months. I have never been on bc before. I am going to make an appointment with my GP this week, but before I go can anyone educate me a little bit, what will my options be?

I don't mind to get my period every month and I'd probably do better with non hormonal options.

What different types are there available?

Thank you!
(I've put this under the UK forum just in case there's anything specific to the way our doctor's operate...)

It may be helpful to speak to a rov first or jewish midwife.

There is the pill which you take for 3 weeks and then give yourself a 1 week break.
Very reliable but it does have hormones in.

Also the nuvaring which I have never used.
You put it up there for a few weeks and then change it.
Also hormones but they are locally.

I would say if you want reliability these are good options.

Hope someonw can give you more insight.

I would suggest calling Tahareinu so you can speak to someone who is well informed on this topic.
I only have the Israeli number, 0722-242424.

They will probably offer you birth control pills.
There are many different types and different ones work for different people.
Sometimes I take the packs back to back so I skip periods for 2 or 3 months at a time.

I live in the UK and I’ve been happy with the copper coil. It is not hormonal.

I wouldn't have the coil inserted for only 6 months. It's not worth it. Realistically op, your options are birth control pills, either the combined or the minipill. You could consider the nuvaring as well.
Non hormonal options would be pretty much only diaphragm with spermicide.

There are also some spemacide inserts that some rabbis give out.. depending on how certain you are that you don’t want to get pregnant (think about 70%) and a bit messy though

Re diaphragm and spemicide - no spermicide is currently approved in the uk that any GP will offer you. So perhaps better not to think down that route.
Speaking from personal experience where I had to find alternative method of contraception.
My current method won't help you if you only want 6 months.
Tahareinu very helpful when I once called, except they weren't aware of UK guidelines and prescription limitations.
Speaking to UK rov and UK Dr is your best bet.
Btdt.
