My husband only wears his hat for Shabbos and simchas. He's very careful to put it back in the box after each wear. The most recent one he bought looks awful after just 2.5 years. My son's hat also looks tired after the same amount of time (brim is floppy and doesn't hold a shape well.) Is that a normal lifespan for a hat? They weren't cheap no name brands either.

You can sometimes take them to the hat store to be re-steamed and refreshed.
But they don't last that long in my experience. I push it for longer but really a new hat every year or two is normal if you want them to always look sharp.

It’s not a need. It’s when styles change. For my husband he’s also refurbished a hat to save money. He’s on hat 3 in 12 years (worn Shabbos and simchas) He cares for his things meticulously

Also depends on the hat. Borsalinos are very expensive but they last the longest.

My husband's hat is 12 years old and looks perfect still. It goes on his head or gets put away. No one sits on it. What is everyone doing with their hats?
Eta: it's a borsalino, if that makes a difference.

That used to be the case but they’ve become very delicate and aren’t lasting the same anymore.

Bar mitzvah boys every 1.5 yrs
Older bochurim- 2/2.5 years
Father- four years
This is daily use or weekday hats.
My husband bh wears a kind of hat that doesn't look any different sknce we got married five years ago, maybe the color faded a bit
What about hat style changes? My brothers/ husband never needed a new hat because of style

So his is a Borsalino as well, but this one lasted less than a year before it really started looking shvach. At this point a new hat really is necessary...
