I want to make Swiss chard as part of my simanim. Does it have a bug problem(in America)? I'm assuming it does b/c it looks like a lettuce. Any body know how to clean it, and a yummy way to cook it?

Yup. You'll need to check for the bugs--I use the leafy bits and stalks of beetroot for simanim.
The easiest way is to cut the leaves from stalks, go through leaves just like you do with lettuce,
but I just soak stalks. (That way, you can also get rid of any residual sands).
I usually boil them in salted water for about 3min, then sautee with a bit of pepper and chopped
garlic. (My family doesn't use lemon juice, but garlics are ok). This tastes a bit like sauteed spinach.

its spinach---you can buy frozen and add egg flour and spice and make patties to fry. or buy bagged prechecked.

Not sure about the yehi ratzon thingy, but swiss chard is NOT spinach. Totally different veggie.
We eat swiss chard occasionally. I recently used this recipe and it was delicious!!

my mil fries it in some sort of batter. It's not bad tasting.
Mommyluv, I know my mil also uses swiss chard for the simanim, not spinich.

In the New York Times today there is a recipe using swiss chard in the food section for R"H. It's an old iranian(?) recipe where they cook it with beets and rice and meat and onions.

You can say the yehi ratzon on whatever you want, but spinach is not one of the simanim.

silka, or spinach is one of the simanim in my machzor---shetalkoo oyvecha v'sonecha vechol mivakshei raatenu. eat and say suru memni kol poali even ki shema hashem kol bechi suru suru tzeoo misham tamei tigaoo tzeoo mitocha hobaroo nosiay kili hashem.
my husbands family has been saying it for years, and my sons scool las labled it on thier list as spinach/swisschard for the last thee years. (whitch is why I assumed it was the same vegtable) this is according to both syrian and turkish tradition.

Yes, silka. Or selek, in Hebrew. Which means beet, not spinach.

I double checked, it says silka, then Pagi (not prasa, thats leek) then spinach. You might not have heard of it but it is befinately one of the simanim and MANY people I know use it.
