I was talking to a friend of mine here and I said that I never really lived in a community since I'm married and really want to. She agreed with me that where we live now, is not really a community. It's a big city with many schools and shuls. I don't really belong to the "school community" because the majority are sefardim and we don't even daven in the same shul. Most of the people from the school is divided into 2 parts, one from one shul (where the school is affiliated) and another shul. I don't go to either shul. This friends children go to different school and shul then we do. She doesn't feel like she really belongs either because she's frummer than most of the student body. The shul we go to is really a small shul and not really any young people anyway.

Whenever anybody here asks what's the norm in your community, I'm stumped.
My question is, what do you consider a community?

I guess it depends...

There's your school community, your shul community, your neighborhood community... and they may or may not be mutually exclusive. They may or may not be the same. I guess your community are the people you see on a pretty regular basis, who know you and hopefully care for you.

They're the ones you know from _______. (school, shul, whatever)

They're the ones who bring you food when you had a baby. They're the ones who C'V pay shiva calls.

I guess it's the people you blend in with and feel connected to for certain reasons that live in your neighborhood.
